In Memory of UM

Note: K went to see UM Monday night before he passed away. This was his favorite song.

Other note: The lyricist was born in Tianjin, China. When he was 28 years old, he became a buddhus monk (named 弘一). The music was written by American composer John P. Ordway.

Beyond the distant pavilion , Beside the ancient
road , Jade green and fragrant, high grass joins the
sky, Evening breeze sways dripping willows, Dying
flute notes linger still, On the hill behind the hill
, the sun sets.

To the ends of the earth and corners of the seas.
Half our friends are scattered. With a scoop of thick
wine. Let's enjoy what joy remains. Tonight's cold
dreams shall be held at bay.

A Valediction

Dreaming of Home and Mother

-J.P. Ordway

Dreaming of home, dear old home!
Home of my childhood and mother;
Oft when I wake 'tis sweet to find,
I've been dreaming of home and mother.
Home, dear home, childhood's happy home
When I played with sister and with brother,
'Twas the sweetest joy when we did roam
Over hill and thro' dale with mother.

Sleep balmy sleep, close mine eyes,
Keep me still thinking of mother;
Hark! 'tis her voice I seem to hear.
Yes, I'm dreaming of home and mother.
Angels come, soothing me to rest,
I can feel their presence and none other;
For they sweetly say I shall be blest,
With bright visions of home and mother.

Chorus:
Dreaming of home, dear old home,
Home of my childhood and mother;
Oft when I wake 'tis sweet to find,
I've been dreaming of home and mother.

Childhood has come, come again,
Sleeping I see my dear mother;
See her loved form beside me kneel
While I'm dreaming of home and mother.
Mother dear, whisper to me now,
Tell me of my sister and my brother;
Now I feel thy hand upon my brow,
Yes, I'm dreaming of home and mother.

If there's one song that's as sad and as beautiful as this one, I'd have to say it'd be this Irish folk song:

* * *

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

Ok. Perhaps there's another one that is as beautiful but not as sad--The Last Farewell by Roger Whittaker & R.A. Webster

* * *

There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell

[Refrain]
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

I've heard there's a wicked war a-blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a-raising
Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell

Though death and darkness gather all about me
My ship be torn apart upon the seas
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
In the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return home safe again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dale

Alright. One last song and I'll call it a quit to the ultimate list of my favorite melancholy farewell songs.

Brother In Arms
-by Dire Straits

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arm

Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I've watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms
